The Schoeffler Lab attended the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans and presented work on three different projects. Dr. Schoeffler presented a poster on python integration in physical chemistry teaching. Seniors Isa Leano and Trinity Martin both presented posters on their work developing an activity assay for DNA gyrase: purifying the E. coli version of the enzyme and testing the its activity at multiple temperatures. This was a year-long effort that required troubleshooting, teamwork, and a lot of attention to detail in the lab. Senior Marcella Malatrasi presented her work on mutagenesis of the antibiotic resistance factor Erm. Her careful assays on ErmE variants have demonstrated that the N-terminal region of the protein may be involved in rRNA binding--an exciting result that might help researchers understand how to inhibit this enzyme and restore the efficacy of macrolide antibiotics in resistant organisms.
Congratulations to our student presenters! Well done in the lab, and on your poster presentations.
